Last weekend we went to beautiful Florence and Cinque Terre. What a wonderful weekend it was. Since we had midterms last week we were unable to leave until Saturday early morning. We arrived in Florence around 10 on Saturday and started exploring right away. It was such a beautiful city, I am glad that I made it even if just for a short visit. The cathedrals were unlike anything I had seen before. I almost think that Santa Maria del Fiore was prettier on the outside than St. Peter's Cathedral here at the Vatican. That may also be because I see St. Peters almost every day, and don't get me wrong it is amazing and probably one of the most beautiful monuments I have seen here in Rome.
While in Florence we also were able to visit Michelangelo's Statue of David at the Accademia Galleria. I really enjoyed visiting this museum because most of the museums and art I have seen while in Rome is from Ancient times. It was great to witness some of the beauty that the Renaissance period also had to offer. Speaking of which the Statue of David blew my mind. the pictures do not do it justice at all. I saw the Pieta in St. Peter's Cathedral and that was breathtaking, but the David Statue was absolutely amazing. The detail on the statue is unbelievable, down the the veins in his hands. And then there is its size. It is so big, to think that one man carved it out of marble astonishes me.
On Sunday we headed to Cinque Terre "le terre dei spogni" (It was a long hard road, but we got there). Cinque Terre is basically five small villages on the coast of the Italian Rivera. This area has spectacular views and is nice and peaceful despite the many tourists that visit every summer. We spent the day hiking from village to village, through vineyards and taking in the spectacular views. The hike was definitely a workout but it was worth it and it was so much fun! The water in Cinque Terre was even more beautiful than the water in Capri. I really wish we could have stayed here longer. I think we all instantly fell in love with this gorgeous place.
Exactly one more week in Rome! So we shall see where my adventures will take me next. Ciao!
