The best part of the trip was probably the people that I met. We had fun through the good times and got through the bad times all together. What this picture doesn't show is how hard we worked and how serious the trip was. We spent the majority of our day working for A Wider Circle. A Wider Circle provides impoverished people with necessary goods and education to rise out of poverty. Mostly we were charged with helping people load furniture and making the show room look presentable; but we also did some community outreach to spread the word about A Wider Circle.
The first night in D.C. was absolutely beautiful. The sunset was breathtaking. We headed over to the National Mall (which the majority of us thought was a place to shop) and took in the major D.C. sites.
Other than a beautiful night tour of all of the monuments, and a trip to the beautiful area known as Georgetown; the majority of our week was spent working. We had the last Saturday off from work though, so before our flight we headed to the National Zoo. My favorite part of the National Zoo was definitely the baby gorilla (pictured above with his mom).
There were also lion cubs at the zoo. All I could think about while watching them was the lion king. The cubs were just playing with each other and pouncing just like Simba and Nala in the beginning of the movie. It was adorable.
And I of course can not leave out our trip to the National Portrait Gallery. We showed up after a long wet and rainy day of work. I absolutely loved it there. Their collection is remarkable, from Revolutionary Era portraits to Modern Day. There were a few Warhol paintings, a couple Robert Mapplethrope photographs (his photograph of Gregory Hines blew me away). They even had a wonderful contemporary art collection. We personally found this portrait of L.L. Cool J to be pretty fantastic mostly because it is huge and ridiculous.
After a long week working in D.C. carrying furniture, and walking endless miles, we headed back to freezing cold Boston, far from rested after spring break. I have headed up to Maine for the weekend for a little R&R and to visit the family.
Have a wonderful weekend everyone!
