henna hair debacle

Yesterday I decided to Henna (naturally color) my hair. So I headed to Lush on Newbury and purchased a wonderful block of "Caca Rouge" (and yes that is pronounced like a synonym for poo). Okay before I go off on a tangent about that... back to the coloring of my hair.

Basically this henna is a mixture of the henna (like the temporary tattoos you can have painted on you at the boardwalk on the beach) and coco butter. It is supposed to make your hair super soft and shiny, while leaving a slight color (they told me I would get an auburn like hue in my dark hair). So I chopped up my henna block and added boiling water to melt it down. It turned into a pasty green unidentifiable substance (which admits my excitement to put this awful smelling "caca" into my hair I forgot to take a picture of).

After making a complete mess of my bathroom, and turning my hands an interesting shade of orange (make sure you use gloves if you try this) the caca was in my hair. I could make my hair do ridiculous things and it was slightly entertaining to make myself look like a green-hair version of Cindy Lou from the Grinch. Then I saran wrapped my hair and let it sit overnight.

Now sleeping in the henna is a whole other story, I suggest putting a nice old towel over your pillows.

When I woke up in the morning I went right to the shower, I could not wait to get this stuff out of my hair after having it in there for almost 10 hours. Washing it out was pretty difficult, I just let the water run over it for a while and then started combing the henna chunks out of my hair. After finally getting it out I did a quick blow-dry. My hair, as promised was very soft, thick, and shiny. And had turned into a deep auburn shade. You can see the red highlights much better in the sun, but I am overall happy with the results.

So if you would like a nice adventure, or need something to bring a little life and excitement back to your hair (without harsh chemicals) head to Lush and grab some Henna. It is actually pretty fun to do especially if you have wonderful roommates that can laugh at you (mine were slightly amused by my newest beauty regiment). The best part is that unlike other at-home dyes you really can't mess up the henna, and it actually is good for your hair.
