Welcome Back to Boston!!

Being back to school is so bittersweet. As senior year takes form I can tell that this is not going to be one of those cake-walk senior years much like highschool was. I have a lot of work cut out ahead of me. My days are packed between class and trying to work to replenish the funds I spent in Rome. Some of my friends from Rome have become some of my best friends here. It is really amazing, and the memory can live on as we share our memories with each other. There are some things that really make me miss Rome though, like the pizza. I would kill for a piece of pizza from Dar Poeta, or even to speak Italian again every day. That being said I can't believe how much I have changed since deciding to go abroad. It didn't end up being a 6 week vacation, or even 6 week educational vacation; it really shaped me for the rest of my life. This isn't something I ever expected from a trip to Europe; maybe a trip to an impoverished African or South American country...yes.

Since returning from Europe I have really opened my eyes to things that actually matter, people that matter, and experiences that matter. I have since put my aspirations to become an attorney on hold instead to apply for Teach for America. For those of you that don't know anything about Teach For America please visit their website and learn because it is a wonderful organization dedicated to closing the achievement gap. www.teachforamerica.org Teach for America is a very competitive application process, but I am hoping for the best and have decided to work towards a masters in teaching and receiving my teaching certification either way.

I think we all take education for granted, I know I did although I always did my best and had ample opportunity I can honestly say I did not ever pay attention to what an extreme problem the achievement gap is in America. I had an idea, yes, I saw kids that I worked with in Bridgeport that were unable to read in 1st and 2nd grade. I always knew this problem existed but I didn't know what an ample problem it was in our society until I really started researching Teach for America.

That being said I have decided to follow my heart, not my need for a high paying job, and follow this calling to teach. I also feel a great need to give back to the Community of Boston. I am going to work on signing up for the Husky Volunteer Team which does a lot of work in the community. Boston has given me so much during my 4 years here, and I think that it is my duty to give a little something back to Boston before I move on to the next challenge that life brings my way.

My trip abroad has really made me appreciate all of the opportunities that I have been given in my life, most specifically through my college education. With that being said I plan to continue this blog during my senior year. In my life I think all of my adventures, every road I take will lead back to Rome. I hope to share my experiences of this year with you all much like I shared my experiences in Rome with you.

Best Wishes!
